This is a comprehensive glossary of terms describing the history, culture and customs of 18th century America as represented in Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. There are over 200 entries including English words, idiomatic and figurative expressions, historical terms and more that can’t commonly be found in an elementary dictionary. To accommodate the different editions of Johnny Tremain, words are listed by chapter in the order they appear in the book with an alphabetical index in the back. Included in the introduction is a brief essay on the times of Johnny Tremain to assist readers in understanding the overall context of the story. There is also an essay regarding figurative language to assist readers with Forbes’s rich use of figurative language.
