1. Curriculum

1.1. Does my child require any special skills to complete your self-paced courses?

While no special skills are required, we highly recommend that students and parents understand and use the study skills covered in these books by L. Ron Hubbard: Learning How to Learn (ages 6-11), Study Skills for Life (ages 12-17) or The Basic Study Manual (ages 18 and up). The Heron Curriculum is effective and practical with all students—this is even more true for students with these study skills. These books can be obtained from Effective Education Publishing, 12424 Lusher Road, St. Louis, MO 63138, voice: 314-355-6355, toll free: 800-424-5397.

1.2. How can I find out what supplies and other materials a student will need to obtain?

Due to their emphasis on application and hands-on activities, most of our courses require additional materials not supplied by Heron Books, such as batteries and bulbs for an electricity course or basic laboratory materials for a microscope course. Sometimes a course will also require a commercial textbook as either the primary or supplementary text.

All required additional books and materials (other than basic academic supplies) are noted in the “materials you need to supply” section in each course description displayed in our online catalog, as well as on the front of the course checksheet (study guide). For unusual materials, supplier suggestions are usually included.

A list of general sources for materials is shown in section 3.3 below.

Please note that because books can go out of print without notice, it is always best to locate copies of the books needed for a course before ordering your materials from Heron Books. However, even out-of-print books often continue to be available through used bookstores or text suppliers.

1.3. Where are your courses that teach the basics like reading, writing and mathematics?

Materials for the core Heron Basics™ Programs are not available on our website because they require specialized training for the person supervising the student and a thorough and consistent implementation. Our website lists courses and related materials which round out the full curriculum but which are supplementary to our Basics Programs.

The Heron Basics Programs achieve a high level of literacy and numeracy. They include preschool to adult-level reading and literature programs, K-8 mathematics, writing mechanics (including spelling, handwriting and basic writing skills) and a custom-written "Math Facts on the Computer" program. They are offered (together with their associated training) under individual contracts to schools and homeschooling groups.

Please contact us at programs@heronbooks.com if you are interested in learning more about the Heron Basics Programs or the arrangements for their use.

1.4. Can I make copies of the Heron Books materials I purchase?

No. Just as in any textbook you purchase, the materials are copyrighted. If you need additional copies of materials you purchased, please order them from Heron Books. Our consumable items are reasonably priced in order to make them as affordable as possible for homeschoolers. Our materials reflect many years of hard work, testing and refinement. Please respect our copyrights.

Schools may contract with us to receive rights for unlimited copying of consumable items. Please contact sales@heronbooks.com if you're interested.

1.5. Do you have diagnostic testing available?

No, but in some cases you can purchase exams for a particular course (rather inexpensively) which you can use as a diagnostic tool. Contact us about this at sales@heronbooks.com.

2.2. How Can I Check My Order Status?

Please send us an email to orders@heronbooks.com with your first and last names and we will email you back with your order status. If we ship your order within the United States via UPS, you will receive an email notice from UPS once your order ships.

2.3. What about online security?

For your security, we encrypt your credit card information at all steps during the checkout process. No unencrypted credit card information is transmitted over the Internet at any point. To achieve this, our website uses the secure sockets layer (SSL) protocol for encrypting information, which is the standard used in nearly all ecommerce sites on the Internet. Furthermore, your order is encrypted another time when it is sent to our sales department for processing. We do not keep your credit card information online for future orders.

2.4. How do I pay for the materials I want to buy?

We accept MasterCard, Visa and Discover Card credit cards for orders placed on our website. We do not accept checks for payment of orders placed via the website, but we will accept orders mailed with a check payable in US funds drawn on a US bank. Our address information is listed above. We charge a $25 fee for any returned checks.

2.5. What do I get when I order a course?

A Heron Books course generally consists of a course “checksheet” (a specific format of study guide), a study booklet (text), and an after-course examination. These materials were designed for students studying independently in a classroom setting, but have also been used very successfully by homeschoolers and individuals around the world.

The course checksheet lists specific steps for the student to do. Usually the student will have text to read, demonstrations to do, concepts to model, and practical actions that encourage interaction with the subject to result in better understanding. The parent or instructor acts as a “supervisor” helping the student as needed.

The examination is administered to the student by the parent after the student completes the checksheet. The examination answers are provided to the parent.

2.6. What about shipping costs?

Shipping charges to the lower 48 United States are determined by the following table:

Order total: Shipping cost:
$0.25 to $100.99 $7.00
$101.00 to $200.99 $8.25
$201.00 to $300.99 $9.50
$301.00 to $400.99 $13.75
$401.00 to $500.99 $17.50
$501.00 to $600.99 $21.50
$601.00 to $999.99 $25.75
$1000.00 to $1100.99 $30.00
$1101.00 to $1500.99 $35.00
$1501.00 to $2000.99 $40.00
$2001.00 to $3000.99 $50.00
$3001.00 or more $60.00

For shipments to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, add $10 to the above shipping costs.

For orders shipped outside of the United States, we charge $20 for each $25 worth of materials purchased. All orders shipped via air freight.

All charges subject to adjustment based on our actual shipping costs. It's not our goal to make a profit from shipping charges. We will occasionally adjust charges up or down if the charges above are greatly above or below our actual shipping costs.

2.7. How fast do you ship orders and what shipping company do you use?

We typically ship all orders within 24 hours of receipt. During peak order times, however, we sometimes need up to five days to process and ship your order. For orders shipping to the United States, items are shipped using United Parcel Service (UPS) ground shipping. If you require express shipping, or require standard postal delivery, you may select these options during the checkout process. Items shipping outside the United States are typically shipped via airmail, although surface shipping is also available at lower rates. If you have questions or special shipping requirements, please email us or call.

There is a $7.00 per-package charge for address changes that occur after shipping, whether changed by customer while package is in transit or by the shipping company with a more deliverable address than originally given.

2.8. What is your refund policy?

Heron Books will accept unmarked, unstamped, resaleable materials back within 45 days of invoice date for any reason, for a full refund or account credit (excluding original shipping charge). Please explain the reasons or circumstances for the return. Shipping charges on returned materials shall be paid by the customer.

2.9. What is your privacy policy?

Heron Books will not sell or give away any information you submit to us in connection with an order you place online. We will occasionally (about 6 times each year) send out a flyer or email announcing a publication of ours that might be of interest to those who have purchased from us in the past. If you would like to not receive postal mail or email announcements from us, please let us know by sending an email to us. Be sure to include the name, email and postal address you want us to remove from our lists.

2.10. What Internet browsers work with your site?

Nearly any popular browser can be used to view our online course catalog. Our shopping cart software, however, requires either Microsoft(c) Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox if you wish to place an order. We are working to support other browsers for the future. If you are unable to place an order online, we are always happy to take your order over the phone at 503-843-3834, 9am - 5pm Pacific Time.

3.3. Where can I find the books and materials you list in the “materials you need to supply” section of your online catalog?

There are many possible sources for additional books needed for a course. We recommend that you first try Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble. These bookstores have huge inventories and can often provide out-of-print books. If they are not able to locate a book, try Powell's Books, another large bookstore that carries many used books.

One of the best sources we have found for used textbooks is Follett Educational Services. Their inventory changes frequently, so they can be rechecked to see if a particular book has become available. Of course, local bookstores and libraries can also be checked, as well as used bookstores. Another good source is the textbook depository of your local school district. Call your school district or board of education to find out how to contact their depository.

Listed below is information on the above sources and additional good sources we have found for books and supplies. If the sources mentioned above cannot provide a particular book, there is a good chance one of the other sources can.
